Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
